Use Of Permanent Dentures After Teeth Extraction
Dentures were once considered something that only old people would wear; however, this is not a truism. Today, people young and old are wearing dentures for one purpose or another. Teeth have to be replaced after an accident or injury and young people are likely to have sports injuries that can affect the mouth and teeth, or automobile accidents that can cause teeth to be knocked out or broken. Both young an old people can lose their teeth to cavities, deterioration, or disease. There is no age that indicates this is the time for tooth replacement.
There was once a stigma associated with wearing dentures at no matter what age, but that is not true today. In these days, the dentures are sturdily made and aesthetically beautiful. Many custom made dentures look so much like the patient's natural teeth that many people cannot, or have not realized the difference.
If you have been informed that you will need to have some, or all of your teeth extracted, then you should discuss with the dentist what alternatives you have for replacements. The topics you should discuss are what kind of replacements are available. If you have only a few teeth to be extracted you may want to have the new teeth placed into the open sockets immediately and bonded to each other and the anchor teeth. And for a few teeth you may have a partial denture that can be clipped onto or attached to the anchor teeth.
If however, you are going to have all of the teeth extracted, then you need to discuss with your dentist whether you should have removable dentures or permanent dentures. We have all seen the removable dentures and know what they are. On the other hand what are permanent dentures? They are exactly what they are named, they are permanent. These are also named as implants.
Implants or permanent dentures are applied surgically. The dental surgeon will permanently place screws (about three of them) to the jaw (upper or lower) that will work to hold the permanent denture in place. When these screws are set in place and sturdy, the denture will be attached to them and the gums will be allowed to heal over them. We have just described a permanent denture that is applied right after extraction. There is a healing process that takes place after this method of denture replacement, but the teeth will always feel natural since the patient has not ever been without teeth. Implants can also be put in place after the extraction as well but it will take the patient more time to get accustomed to them as they will feel like foreign bodies in the patient's mouth.
Until you have discussed these 2 procedures for permanent dentures with your dentist you should not try to make a decision on your own. Once you have discussed it with your dentist and are told what you can hope according to the structure of your mouth, you can then make your knowledgeable choice and enjoy your new permanent dentures.
